UbiDuo Experiences

Don & Lynn Garretson

Located in Sedalia, MO
Communicating with family, friends and school counselors

"The friends were able to bond for the first time after eight years! Now they are no longer strangers to each other."

In the photo above, Don Garretson talks to his friend Chad about his race car. The UbiDuo's battery power makes it a perfect communication device in locations where there aren't many electrical outlets. Before the UbiDuo, Don and Chad had to use their own made-up signs to get their thoughts across. Don said it was so frustrating that they couldn't simply talk to each other about their favorite hobby: car racing. Don was ecstatic to finally to chat with Chad. Don had wanted to have man-to-man conversations with Chad for years. They were able to share their opinions on any topic, such as women, racing cars, or finances. The friends were able to bond for the first time after eight years! Now they are no longer strangers to each other.

Don talks to his stepson Garrison on the UbiDuo. Garrison wasn't comfortable communicating with Don using sign language. They could understand each other only with simple signs. Now they can have deeper conversations on the UbiDuo. So easy even a child can do it!

Don Garretson talks with a friend for the first time on the UbiDuo
Don talks with his friend John for the first time on the UbiDuo. For a few years John tried to communicate with Don using body language and gestures, but it just didn't work. They were still strangers to each other even though they hung out often with another friend, Chad, while working on Chad's race car. When Don and John spoke with each other for the first time on the UbiDuo, they talked for an hour just getting caught up with who they really were. Now they hang out with Chad without feeling uncertain about each other! They are able to freely communicate on the UbiDuo about anything!

Lynn Garretson talks with her friend Nichole on the UbiDuo
Lynn Garretson talks to Nichole for the first time after being strangers for two years. They attended their friends' parties in the past and never really had a true conversation. All they could do was say "hi" or "how are you?" After they spoke freely on the UbiDuo, Lynn explained that they both felt so much more comfortable sharing their thoughts about different issues, such as Nichole's new baby. Nichole got to know who Lynn really was, and she gave Lynn some of her baby's pictures.

Don Garretson talks with his counselor at SFCC on the UbiDuo
This is Don at an appointment with the counselor Deb at State Fair Community College in Sedalia, MO. Don used to go to SFCC only on Mondays and Fridays from 1:00 to 3:00 to work in the GED lab because of the availability of the interpreter. Now with the UbiDuo he is free to go to the lab any time of the week without an interpreter. Don was able to chat with the SFCC staff on his own with the UbiDuo. He said he felt a new sense of independence being able to speak for himself. The SFCC staff was thrilled that they could finally talk to him directly without an interpreter. One of the main features of the UbiDuo is its portability; it can be folded up, tucked in its carrying case, and taken anywhere you need to go!

Lynn Garretson talks with her friend Courtney on the UbiDuo
Lynn visits freely with her friend Courtney on the UbiDuo. For two years they could not have an in-depth conversation. They used to say "hi" or "how are you?" or "bye." They were like strangers until the UbiDuo broke the ice. When Lynn got the UbiDuo, she met Courtney alone for lunch for the first time, and that lunch lasted two hours! They were able to simply talk to each other on the UbiDuo and discussed many different topics. They couldn't even finish what they wanted to get off their chests! The UbiDuo is designed to fit comfortably on laps for relaxed conversations with family or friends. It has a wireless network, which means the two halves can be up to 500 feet apart and still communicate.
